Something that popped into my mind that I just had to write on….. (First, an obvious disclaimer:
I am NOT a Police Officer or in any way involved in the Police Service, Nor am I lawyer or judge – but I do play one on TV (just kidding. Seeing if your paying attention). What I am about to write is ENTIRELY my own opinion. Whether or not it is agreed upon by others is purely coincidental.
I have not seen this in person, but have seen a number of videos showing people arguing with a police officer trying to get out of a ticket. To me this is laughable. Like standing there arguing with a cop is going to keep them from writing you a ticket. More than likely they will write you the biggest damn ticket that they possibly can, or as many as they can. To quote MotorCop “I can write as many BLESSED tickets as I BLOODY well like”
To me the answer is simple – Want respect? Give respect! I’m not saying this is a “get out free” card. Being respectful to an officer will not guarantee that you won’t get a ticket, but can pretty much guarantee that the opposite will definitely get you one.
Show the officer respect due his position. His job is not an easy one don’t make it harder. If asked, explain the situation WITHOUT excuses & Bull Shit. IAnswer any questions the officer might have honestly. If you screwed up, own up to it.
Going back to the arguing with a cop bit…. So you disagree with the ticket to the officer is writing you and believe him to be wrong….. Guess what, he believes himself to be in the right otherwise he wouldn’t be standing there. No, most officers are NOT out to hit a quota – they are just doing their job trying to keep your butts safe (I say most because there are always bad apples out there, but they’re few & very far between).
My advice? Continue to Treat the officer with respect. Remember earlier comment “Arguing with a cop will guarantee a ticket” – maybe even bigger (or more) than what the officer was originally going to write. Even if you disagree, accept the ticket graciously (bite tongue if need be) – Can always argue it in court later. Make note of badge number – more than likely it will be on your ticket. By the way threats of suing , speaking to commanding officer, and other such ummmm niceties are not appropriate and will NOT help your cause. I pretty much guarantee that all of this will be in the officer’s report.
Have an AWESOME day and Stay Safe out there on the roads.
