The most important thing with any chemical fire is to know what you are dealing with. In fact, with any fire you should be aware of any potential chemicals that could come into play. In fact, with any fire you should be aware of he potential for chemicals (even minor ones).
Any building containing Hazardous Chemicals should have a NFPA Panel displayed. Material Safety Data Sheets or Product Safety Data Sheets exist for most all chemicals out there. In addition HazMat Placards are required when Hazardous Material is being shipped. Any of these can give invaluable information about various Chemicals. Of course a good rule of thumb is to familiarize yourself with common used Chemicals used in your area (and maybe even some not so common) — After all your going to be hard pressed to find time to study the “books” in the Heat of the Moment.
