Not sure who came up with the phrase as it relates to firefighting, or who came up with the original phrase in the first place, but it is definitely a piece of wisdom IMO. Without expertise and years of knowledge there’s not much I can say on the subject, but I do have a couple thoughts:
For those who might think to complain… “It’s too hot to wear my PPE” or “My PPE is to heavy”…. Let me ask you this – Would you go to a real fire without your PPE or the rest of your gear? Would you go in to a burning building in shorts & t-shirt? When your carrying that hose at an actual fire are you wearing that same shorts & T-shirt?? They why train that way.
Training should be as close to the real thing as possible so that the actions become second nature – more than second nature. Use it as a way to better yourself and learn… And then learn some more.
Remember Safety First. You can’t help others if you yourself have become a victim.
