The other day I over heard a friend/acquaintance talking about a situation where a family member had apparently been taken to jail(?) because he was, apparently, slurring his words and having difficulty with his balance. My understanding is that there was also some sort of one-sided deficiency. There was no smell of alcohol on his breath or any drugs. After taking him in and going through all that, they discovered that the guy in question was having a “Heart Attack”. Having only overheard the story and not having all the facts (not to mention not being a medical professional) my guess would be stroke not heart attack. Nonetheless, the message is the same.
Do not fall into the trap of thinking that if someone has X,Y,Z symptoms that the problem must have A, B, or C problem.
Just because someone appears to be drunk doesn’t not necessarily mean that it is so. While chances are good that they could be, one cannot over look the fact that there could be a medical reason such as Hypoglycemia or Stroke (to name just a couple).
A case in point on Hypoglycemia. I have a very good friend who, when she gets hypoglycemic, will, like most hypoglycemics, have difficulty walking a straight line and will slur her words (as you might expect someone who is drunk or on drugs to do)… And if she is severely hypoglycemic can become argumentative and borderline combative.
Keep in mind that things may not always be as it seems. Keep an open mind as to everything that could possibly be going on. Don’t make rash decisions or judgements based on first impressions.
