Tonight’s Tweetalong is in honor of GPD K9 Ronin (EOW 6/20/2013), who was killed in the line of duty.
K9 – Officer Ronin belonged to Officer Zygmont (the officer on duty during tonight’s tweetalong). Read HERE about the bond between handler and K9 and HERE to read about K9 Ronin. This is Officer Tracey Breeden going live with the GPD TweetAlong! Officer Wes Zygmont and K9 Mick are ready to go!
….then again Mick would rather have a belly rub.
Mick also knows the importance of stretching before you go to work!
Officer Zygmont is a 14 year veteran officer, happily married & loves motor cross. Little known fact about Wes is he is a plumber by trade.
18:09: Finished with media interviews and now we are rolling…stay tuned.
Here’s a quick Trivia question for you – True or false: most police dogs come from overseas?
Did you guess true?? You got it right. A majority of police dogs come from Europe. (The two most common breeds used as police dogs are the German Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois). K9 Mick is a Malinois born in New Jersey. His handler, Officer Zygmont, is originally from Massachusetts.
Speaking of K9 Mick, here’s another trivia question from GPD – How fast can K9 Mick run?
The winner of this was @Cynthia24x7 who guessed 28 mph. A human only averages about 15mph (so any bad guys thinking they want to try to out run K9 Mick or any other K9 out there – Don’t Bother!!)
The runner up was @craigy8122 with a guess of 25 mph
18:47: Making our first traffic stop of the evening.
This little watchdog here doesn’t like us a making a stop near his home! – https://instagram.com/p/4DXuiPlyRr/
19:02: Officer Zygmont and K9 Mick respond to a call to assist an officer making contact with a suspect with a felony warrant. Mick will be searching the resident
Here we go! https://instagram.com/p/4DdUNTlyZ2/
The Search begins! https://instagram.com/p/4DeLzQFybU/ Let’s see what Mick can find!
By the way, Mick is dual purpose dog. He is an apprehension and narcotics K9. We are conducting a narcotics search
While searching Mick’s nose went up and he showed alert signs. A sign something is up high. Their nose usually stays low to the ground.
Can you find the paraphernalia pipe in this photo? Mick did!
And look what fell out of a pile of towels high in a closed closet. Mick was right on!
19:58: No time for Mick to rest! Now on our way to north Glendale for a possible vehicle search.
The vehicle was stopped by the Neighborhood Response Unit for suspended.
Items found for using & smoking Heroin located in the vehicle.
The two young men in their 20’s will be going to jail.
Heroin is an epidemic in our country with young adults. Educate. Get help – http://youtu.be/CTj5DeZlI5I
Time for some training with K9 Mick! Want to see a K9 bite???
- Training search begins with #K9 Mick! – https://instagram.com/p/4DoWl_lyaW/
- Mick is on the search for the suspect! – https://instagram.com/p/4DocRjlyaf/
- Mick and his handler Officer Zygmont locate the suspect! – https://instagram.com/p/4DonltFyat/
Mick showed fantastic skills and control during training (oh, and if that previous statement about a K9s running speed of 28mph to a human’s 15 mph doesn’t deter a person from thinking of trying to outrun perhaps this will – Can you imagine not having a “bite suit”) – https://instagram.com/p/4DpBSclybQ/
Glendale PD K9 Unit Called it a night around 9:30
“We are getting ready to head in for the night! Thank you to all who followed us tonight on our GPD K9 TweetAlong! Be Safe!”
Somebody loves his handler!
