Joining up for another WeekendCoffeeShare
Have to make this week quick as the family is going to a movie event tonight and it’s getting close to time to get ready to get going….
Our son got home, yesterday, from his 2 week trip up to Oregon. Apparently he had a good time on the drive up there in the RV with great grandma and the flight home went off without a hitch No biggy on that last since he’s flown by himself before, no problem. Only thing is this time there was not a direct flight so he had to transfer planes. Now he is eligible for what’s called “teen assist” (which is basically same as “unacompanied minor” which means he got escort for transfer… Still, we’ve all heard the horror stories of unaccompanied children who had been lost or left behind in airports (despite paying extra fee for escort). You better believe we told him that at nearing 14, he is well old enough to speak up for himself if it seems like it’s been too long and no one’s come for him.
Since he is 14 (well in another week) he’s eligible for teen non-assist which means he doesn’t get any help at all even w/ transfers… Have to admit the idea of that makes me extremely nervous. But, who knows, next summer??? Perhaps…. I’ll definitely want him to have a fully charged cell-phone (that he won’t be allowed to play on at all during flight) and I’ll expect him to call when he gets to connecting airport and talk to us until at gate for connecting flight. Ohhh and you better believe we’ll find a way to get any info we can about connecting flight and map of connecting airport and have it all mapped out with him ahead of time.
Sorry to be a bit out of order and all over map in my thoughts.
It’s kind of funny. Our son really doesn’t need to have a “teen assist” thing, EXCEPT for maybe the transfer things.. Once he’s on flight he’s perfectly fine and can get himself off the plane. Only other question with teen non-assist is where do we meet him? can we get pass to go to gate to meet him or does he have to come out to main terminal area to meet us … Hmmmm something to find out about. But no hurry yet. Not even something to worry about till maybe next year. If he goes to grandpa’s again next year. But then he (our son) is talking about being a Jr. Staffer at camp, so he might not be going.
Well I’m talking in circles and wasting time (not to mention typing in a rush. Gotta run folks. Have a wonderful and safe week. And make sure that you if your sending your kids off on a trip unaccompanied to talk to them about travel safety and what to do in various situations. Who to talk to, who not to talk to, how to ask for help or get assistance from, etc.
