“A Hero is an ordinary person, doing what needs to be done in extraordinary circumstances” ~ Source Unknown
I can’t help but thing of those that risk (and sometimes even sacrificed) their lives by running into and towards situations that would have many of us running in the opposite direction… Firefighters running into burning buildings, Police Officers running in to a known shooting situation…. Things that go against human logic of preservation. It takes a special person to put ones self into a frame of mind to help others at the risk of your own life.
It’s easy to start putting these guys up on pedestals (and perhaps, in a way, they deserve to be up there to a large degree)… But we must also remember that these same folks who risk their lives are normal every day people that have families, friends, loved ones. They have good and bad days like the rest of us (except that on the job a bad day for them could mean a loss of property or worse life). They get up and put their pants on one leg at a time (unless they’re putting on PPE’s in which case, yes, it very well may be two). They Love, They Laugh, They Cry, They Scream (if only on the inside). They Shop, They Cook…. They do many of the same things that the rest of us do. The one big difference?? When it comes to helping others they are willing to run toward (and even into) danger in order to help others and save lives.
Ask any Firefighter, any Police Officer why they do what they do – Why they chose the career they do – Their Answer: “I want to help people”
