There have been a number of occasions where I’ve watched “civilians” fail to notice an Emergency Vehicle leaving from a station despite the fact that said EV had all of it’s lights and sirens going. In at least one instance it took the blowing of the Air Horn (?) to get the traffics attention.
My “Safety Tip” today is a simple one – Keep and Eye Out.
Ever heard the phrase “See Track, Think Train”?? Well I think the same could apply for Fire Houses/Stations. When you see a Fire Station, Think Fire Engine. Know that at any given time a Fire Engine (or other Fire Apparatus) could emerge from those bay doors. Those traffic lights in front of some stations that turn red when a fire engine is emerging to go on a call — they mean stop. And even if they don’t turn red, when you see a fire engine coming out lights & sirens, for GodSake STOP and let them out.
And on the flip side of the equation, speaking to those who are in the Fire Service… Don’t assume the other guy sees you. Don’t assume they are going to stop for you. Sadly world is full of people who are lazy, in too big a hurry, don’t pay attention, or just plain don’t give a shit.
