Yesterday marked my 4th year of attendance at the annual Tucson Climb 4 The Fallen.
I didn’t get to watch the actual “climb” this year as I was helping run the Mary Kay booth
Like Drexel Heights Fire
I did ask around and learned that the guy who climbs with the flag of names was there again this year but I never saw him. Another regular climber an adorable little boy who I saw doing the climb the first year I went atop his dad’s shoulders, didn’t seem to be there this year – at least no one remembered seeing him. Another familiar face was the lady I’ve seen several years in a row who comes to cheer on her son & daughter who climb, as well as all the others who participate in the climb.
I did, of course have to take a moment to say hello to Danny Rowen an Ex FDNY firefighter, turned Police Officer. For at least 3 years now he’s been at the opening ceremony to give a speech. He lost many “brothers” and friends that day as the events of 9-11 unfolded and many more to the dangers of the job of being a firefighter. I heard him once say that he keeps a tribute to those that died in 9-11 in his patrol car… I wonder if that’s still true. One thing to be said about Mr. Rowen – He is a humble down to earth person with a sense of humor…. In his line of work (both as a firefighter and now a police officer) it’s a much needed commodity.
If you’re going to be in the Tucson area next year around this time, I hope you’ll come cheer on the climbers….. And if you happen to be a firefighter or Law Enforcement Officer, how about registering for the climb. www.climb4thefallen.com for more info. And be sure to check out their facebook page: Climb 4 the Fallen… And give it a “like” I know they’ll appreciate it 🙂
